A Reimagined
Whittwood Town Center:

  • Represents a standard of excellence
  • Designed for people and how they live
  • Provides opportunities to gather and connect as a community
  • Creates an environment that promotes health and wellness

Whittwood Town Center is uniquely positioned to become a vibrant mixed-use town center given its proximity and increasing transit connectivity.  City planners have studied Whittier Boulevard, and it has been regionally identified as a transit corridor. In addition, Whittwood Town Center has been identified as a transit center connecting people to employment opportunities and services.

Why?

Close to regional and community facilities:

  • Transportation – Proximity to a major transportation corridor
  • Medical Services – Positioned between Whittier Hospital and St. Jude Medical Center
  • Education – Convenient access from Whittier College and Biola University
  • Recreation – Near regional recreational facilities including Arroyo Pescadero, Hellman Park Trailhead, Elderberry Trail, Arroyo San Miguel, Murphy Ranch Park
  • Governmental – Easy access to public facilities including Whittier City Hall, Whittier Public Library, Whittier City Library, multiple DMV kiosks

The Future of Retail

Whittwood Town Center needs to be prepared to reposition in a thoughtful and organized way with the least amount of disruption to the existing community and retailers.

With consumers no longer needing to be present to shop, retailers look for mixed-use developments that offer the consumer an exciting “town center” environment to live, work, shop, and play. As e-commerce grows, retailers’ building footprints are shrinking and moving from a merchandise volume approach toward one focused on the consumer experience. Consumers are seeking more than products. They are seeking a retail shopping experience that offers a sense of community.

As the retail industry continues to evolve, we’re planning for the future transition of the Sears, JC Penney and/or Kohl’s stores, if they’re no longer viable, to mixed-use developments that would include retail, restaurants, entertainment, and residential to create an exciting live, work, shop, and play environment.

The decline of retail has been highlighted in the news media and in discussions at the dinner table. This article discusses common themes surrounding retail malls and shopping centers across America.

This is an opportunity for the Whittwood Town Center to grow with these trends and become a gathering place for Whittier residents. This endeavor needs the Whittier community to get involved. Please join us in reimagining the Whittwood Town Center. Click here to get involved.

Taking Time to Carefully Plan for the Future

The community-wide benefits that will accompany the new planning areas at the Whittwood Town Center will be brought in over time as new areas of the shopping center are reimagined.

The centerpiece of the new Whittwood Town Center will be The Plaza—a place to gather and connect with old friends and new, a place to hang out and relax, a place to meet before dining at a restaurant, shopping or enjoying a movie.

As you can see here, Whittwood Town Center has served the area with shopping, retail and restaurants for 61 years. Now, we look to the future and see so much more for Whittier. For this centrally located, community asset, we see a cohesive, vibrant mixed-use center with opportunities for additional and upgraded shopping, dining, hospitality and living.
